Welcome to Blue Poppy Health!
My name is Allison Macbeth and I’m the Founder & Director of Blue Poppy Health. I love talking about sexual health, hormones, fertility, and menstruation, and I want to share my knowledge with you!
I’m a certified Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner trained at the Justisse College and I have a Masters in Human Sexuality and Sexual Health Education from the University of Sydney in Australia.
My mission is to teach fertility awareness and body literacy to people like you so you can be empowered in your relationship with your body, fertility, menstruation, and sexual health. By learning how your body works and understanding your hormones, you can use natural methods of birth control (which are more than 99% effective), plan and prepare for pregnancy, and better manage your hormonal health!
How does fertility awareness work?
Your body is talking to you! It’s telling you when sex will lead to a baby and when it will just be a night of fun. It’s telling you why your cramps are so crippling. It’s telling you why you’re cranky and bloated. The problem is that most of us don’t listen to our bodies!
At Blue Poppy Health I can teach you how to listen to your body and understand your hormones! If you sign up for one of my programs you will learn how to use the fertility awareness method to understand your hormone balance and know when you are ovulating. I think it’s the most amazing thing that our bodies tell us what’s going on inside, allowing us to understand what’s happening every single day!
With the fertility awareness method you can use a natural method of birth control with the confidence that it’s as effective as hormonal birth control, but without all the synthetic hormones or side effects!
You can address and improve issues like PMS, cramps, irregular periods, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and even some common causes of infertility!
And of course, if you are looking to have a little bundle of joy, you will learn how to prime your body for pregnancy and determine the days where sex is most likely to lead to conception!
It all comes down to simple daily observations and charting of your cervical mucus and body temperature. If you learn the fertility awareness method you will soon be an expert in your hormones, ovulation, and fertility!
How did I get here?
I have always been passionate about empowering people to understand their own sexual health.
While completing my undergrad at UBC in Vancouver, Canada, I volunteered with Options for Sexual Health (affiliated with Planned Parenthood) on their telephone helpline. Then I flew off to Sydney, Australia to get my Masters in Human Sexuality and Sexual Health Education at the University of Sydney, and then I was off to London, England to work for the Terrence Higgins Trust, the largest HIV charity in Europe, as an Information Officer providing HIV and sexual health education to the masses.
It was during my time in London that I discovered fertility awareness and a light bulb went off in my head! Once I figured out that my body could tell me when I was ovulating and what my hormones were doing, I felt empowered and in control of my body in a way that I had never felt before!
I had taken the birth control pill on and off for years, but was never totally comfortable with it. I still took it, begrudgingly, because I thought there weren’t any other good choices. Was I wrong! Fertility awareness is an amazing form of contraception and incredibly effective!
I knew right away that it was my calling in life to teach fertility awareness methods so other people could feel as empowered as I did!
I immediately enrolled in a rigorous program to become a Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner, where I learned the scientific basis for the fertility awareness method and how to help people use that knowledge in a practical way through daily observations of their body and menstrual cycles. Studying with the Justisse College was invaluable because it allowed me to take the information from my Masters degree and pair it with a practical way of delivering sexual health and reproductive information.
In addition to being part of the Justisse community of practitioners, I’m certified by the Association of Fertility Awareness Professionals, as well as being on the Community Advisory Council at the UBC Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research*.
Why Blue Poppy?
The blue poppy has always held a special place in my heart, since it was the favourite flower of my grandmother (a wonderful and inspiring woman). And like fertility, the blue poppy won’t grow just anywhere, but when it’s exposed to the right conditions it will thrive!
Blue Poppy Vision
A world where all women, girls, and menstruators have knowledge of body literacy and are able to make truly informed and empowered decisions about sex, contraception, and child-bearing.
Blue Poppy Mission
To provide comprehensive and accurate body literacy and fertility awareness education to women, girls, and menstruators around the world, empowering and supporting them in their sexual and reproductive decision-making.

*I researched how a women’s interest in sex is related to the menstrual cycle. The answer is not what you would expect! Ask me and I’d be happy to tell you all about it.
